The Weekly Nibble: Investing Tips from Warren Buffet’s Mentor

Here are some of the more interesting articles that have appeared on the Motley Fool Singapore’s website this week.

1. Should you invest in index funds, unit trusts or individual stocks?

If you are just starting out investing, you might be wondering if it is wise to spend time picking stocks individually or would it be better to leave your money to the “experts”. To help with that thought, my Foolish colleague, Jeremy Chia, looks at the pros and cons of investing in the different types of investment options – index funds, unit trusts or individual stocks.

For the pros and cons of putting your money into exchange-traded funds like the SPDR STI ETF (SGX: ES3), which tracks the fundamentals of the Straits Times Index (SGX: ^STI), head here.

2. Meet Warren Buffett’s mentor, Benjamin Graham

Warren Buffett once said that Benjamin Graham, was an incredible teacher and that he was a natural.

Graham’s book, The Intelligent Investor, has also affected Buffett’s life positively. “If I hadn’t read that book in 1949, I’d have had a different future,” he mentioned.

For those investors who have not read the book, you can check out Stanley Lim’s article here on the criteria Graham looked out for before investing in stocks.

3. Strategy of Singapore’s largest bank

DBS Group Holdings Ltd (SGX: D05) is one of the three local banks in Singapore. In his article, Lawrence Nga, presented his studies of the firm’s growth strategies in the years ahead after scouring through the latest annual report.

The two topics covered in the article are:

1) having a focus on Asia; and

2) making banking a happy experience.

Well, who wouldn’t like a better customer experience when they visit a bank?
