2 Key Insights to Learn From StarHub Ltd’s Management

StarHub Ltd (SGX: CC3) is second biggest player among the big trio in Singapore’s telecommunications industry, the others being Singapore Telecommunications Limited (SGX: Z74) and M1 Ltd (SGX: B2F)

Last year, StarHub made a few notable moves to refresh its management team.

Tan Guong Ching, the Chairman of the board, retired in July 2015. He was replaced by Steven Terrell Clontz. During the same month, StarHub also brought in Howie Lau as its new chief marketing officer and Dennis Chia as chief financial officer.

Chia was featured recently in an interview series. There might be things we can learn from this relatively new member of StarHub’s management team. From the interview, I picked out two key insights that may be useful for investors.

1. Forming the right team

“I tend to be extremely pointed and unrelenting in my expectations of them, while my predecessors, as I understand it, were a lot more patient and fatherly in their approach.

But I have always articulated to them that this is a two-way street – I’m not trying to treat you like machines, but to get you to step up and show your continued relevance to the company.”

Chia has been working hard to establish rapport with his team.

He believes in direct communication and feels that it is important to set the right expectations for members of his team. Furthermore, Chia is also looking to introduce new talent. He feels that it is important to have the necessary skill sets to engage in future battles.

This could be important, given the evolving nature of StarHub’s business landscape.

2. The importance of people

“I believe that you are only as good as the people you have working for you”

Chia’s focus on forming his team could be based on his belief that he is only as good as the people he surrounds himself with. He feels that it is important to lead by example, have full accountability, and build up the people around him.
