How You Can Get the Latest and Important Updates about Singapore’s Stock Market

Newswires can provide investors with some of the latest news about companies in Singapore. But how might one be able to find first-hand information beyond what’s reported in the news? This is how I do it.

Morning dose of updates

All listed companies in Singapore – be it the 30 constituents of the Straits Times Index (SGX: ^STI) or small companies in the Catalist exchange – are required by bourse operator Singapore Exchange to release any significant information through a web portal.

Therefore, every morning, I will drop by the “Company Announcements” page maintained by Singapore Exchange to learn about the latest updates on every company listed here. If you are interested in finding first-hand information about companies, this is the place you need to go to.

What you will find

Companies will post information about themselves such as their latest earnings results, significant business deals, and any fund raising exercises, through the platform. Singapore Exchange also requires companies to release information when they are engaged in buybacks of their own shares or when insiders / substantial shareholders have made trades.

What you will not find

What is very rare though, is information regarding the macro-economic environment as the platform is meant more for company-specific information. You will also not be able to find rumours about a company on the platform.

The problem

There are some issues concerning an individual’s ability to follow all the announcements posted on the website. It’s not uncommon to find hundreds of announcements being posted in a single day. The sheer volume of information might not be easily digestible.

Moreover, the information that’s released comes without additional analysis on what they might mean for investors. Therefore, if you are someone who has time constraints, reading all the annnouncements on the page might not be a sustainable practice.

Another alternative

There is an alternative. My colleagues and I at the Motley Fool Singapore trawl the Singapore Exchange’s Company Announcements.

We are looking at the information to learn about the latest developments before presenting them – along with analysis on what they might mean for investors – to you.

If you are someone who likes digging through lots of information and sorting them out by yourself, feel free to do so (it can even be fun!). For the rest, let us do the dirty work for you.
