Berkshire Hathaway, Here I Come!

Do you know that a major event in the world of investing will be happening really soon? For those who’re wondering – yes, I’m talking about the upcoming Berkshire Hathaway Inc annual general meeting that will be held over the coming weekend!

While my colleague Chong Ser Jing had attended the event last year, I’m the lucky one this time around with the privilege of flying halfway across the world to Omaha, Nebraksa to hear Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger hold court.

Berkshire Hathaway has been an incredible success story under the leadership of the legendary Buffett. This year’s meeting holds extra significance as 2015 marks the 50th anniversary of Buffett running Berkshire.

Over the half-century that has passed, Buffett has grown Berkshire’s per-share book value by 19.4% annually, resulting in a very impressive total increase of 751,113%. But while the growth in book value has been phenomenal, you ain’t seen nothing yet – a shareholder of Berkshire in 1965 would have seen his or her investment grow by 18,262 times its initial value (that’s a 1,826,200% gain!) by the end of 2014.

Over the same period of time, the S&P 500, a broad market index in the USA akin to the Straits Times Index (SGX: ^STI) here in Singapore, has “only” jumped by 112 times in value.

A very lively AGM

Unlike most AGMs held by companies in Singapore, Berkshire Hathaway’s one is an all-weekend event that’s filled with exhibitions, shopping trips, dinner events, tours of many of Berkshire’s businesses, the main meeting itself, and even a 5 km fun race.

Berkshire’s AGMs over the past few years have seen more than 30,000 people attend per meeting. Considering that Omaha is a city of only about 400,000 people, Berkshire’s AGM is quite literally the main event for the city every year.

The bounties I’m bringing back

I am excited to hear what Buffett and Munger have to say this year (both men will spend more than six hours answering questions during the meeting, so you can be sure there’d be plenty of wisdom shared!).

Stay tuned over the next two weeks as I’d be bringing you my thoughts about the event and the insights I’ve gleaned. Omaha’s 14,863km away, but I’ve never been more excited to embark on such a long journey. Berkshire Hathaway, here I come!
