STI Dividends Total S$16 Billion Over Past 12 Months

Dividends are an important aspect of investing that enable companies and trusts to distribute income to their share and unit holders. All 30 stocks of the Straits Times Index (SGX:^STI) have provided such distributions amounting to an estimated total of S$16.1 billion to their shareholders over the past twelve months.

The estimation of S$16.1 billion is based on Bloomberg data which provides approximate levels of shares outstanding at the time of distribution, including both public and private shareholders. Also reflecting the international aspect of the STI, exchange rates have to be taken into account for seven of the 30 STI constituents.

The majority of the pay-outs occurred in August, when as many as 18 STI stocks provided a dividend. Among the constituents, Singapore Telecommunications Ltd (SGX:Z74) was the largest dividend distributor, paying out approximately S$1.6 billion in August. This brought the total estimated amount of dividend distribution for Singtel to S$2.7 billion over the past twelve months. Singtel is the largest capitalised stock on SGX in addition to its accolade of being the largest capitalised stock across the ASEAN exchanges. Although listed in 1993, the business of Singtel was established in 1879 and according to the National Library Board, its initial 50 line telephone exchange was established in 1881.

The next four largest distributions over the past twelve months were made by DBS Group Holdings (SGX:D05), Oversea-Chinese Banking Corporation Ltd (SGX:O39), Jardine Matheson Holdings Ltd (SGX:J36) and United Overseas Bank Ltd (SGX:U11). These four stocks had an estimated total dividend distribution of S$5.0 billion.

The two real estate investment trusts (REITs) in the STI distributed estimated total dividends of S$629.1 million over the past twelve months with CapitaMall Trust (SGX: C38U) and Ascendas REIT (SGX: A17U) distributing S$458.8 million and S$170.3 million respectively. The business trust, Hutchison Port Holdings Trust (SGX:NS8U), distributed estimated dividends of S$577.7 million over the same period.Note the distribution for Ascendas REIT does not take into account the S$0.073 per unit distribution that goes ex-dividend on 29 October. On 29 October, the twelve month distribution history for Ascendas REIT is scheduled to be closer to S$345.8 million, based on the current number of units outstanding.

The two SGX-listed ETFs that track the STI also distribute dividends on a semi-annual basis. The approximate distributions over the past twelve months are tabled below:
